Different questions, different cohorts
Admissions and discharges count events within the chosen dates. Census includes patients admitted before the start date who are still present at the snapshot. Length of stay uses the discharge cohort, including the full stay rather than truncating it to the filter period.
Boundary rules & demonstration limits
Date range: start inclusive through midnight following the end date exclusive. At a midnight census snapshot, admission at or before the instant counts; discharge at that instant does not. All calculations use UTC solely for this demo; production reporting needs facility-local cutoffs and daylight-saving rules.
Each synthetic encounter has one unit for its full stay. A production unit census must apply location-history intervals to attribute transfers at each snapshot. Unit labels, providers, dates, and results here are fictional; the layout demonstrates analytical intent, not actual hospital performance.
Average LOS is not a risk-adjusted efficiency score. Case mix, service, patient class, and discharge barriers need context before drawing conclusions.
